PMFL weekly email – lesson starter recap

Bonjour! Hola! ¡Buenos días!
We hope that this email finds you well.

Here is a brief idea to try at the start of each lesson. If you want to recap on previous learning, using a soft ball, soft toy or bean bag, throw the object to the first person and recap on a question/phrase or vocabulary you have been learning. Sometimes this works well with cohorts whereby the person that has the object then chooses the next person to throw it to. Alternatively you can take the learning outside, split the children into 5 groups of 6 and ask them to pass an object in their circle saying the words/phrases from the last lesson.
Gracias! Merci!

PMFL weekly email – Share the weather daily!

Bonjour! Hola! ¡Buenos días!
We hope that you are well and that you have had a good week.

This week, what a good idea to share the weather daily in the target language! Create a chart/poster or have individual weather cards you can stick or velcro to a board.

See attached for some ideas!

If you would like to share a weather song first with your class these are good options:

PMFL weekly email – Food matching

Bonjour! Hola! ¡Buenos días!
We hope that you are all well. This week, this food matching activity might be a good thing to plan for the end of summer term as part of a celebration lesson. There is a cost element however the idea is that the children do not eat all of the food! They perhaps have one thing to taste or try at the end! Alternatively, you can have pictures of foods or a mixture of pictures and actual foods.

Have a variety of foods placed on tables around the classroom, this might include foods traditional to the country that are easier to guess such as croissants (France) and churros (Spain).

All of the foods are numbered and the children are given a list of the food words in the target language.

Children work in pairs and have to record the correct number next to each food. There need to be about 25-30 different foods/pictures to make it enough of a challenge. You can include foods they do not know by using cognates/near cognates and also encouraging them to use their language detective skills.

Children then have to use the information to create some of their own phrases and sentences using and revising opinions such as ‘J’aime and Je n’aime pas’ for example or ‘Me gusta and No me gusta!’

At the end of the lesson, children have the opportunity to try some of the foods! Then express their preference for this in the TL!

Gracias! Merci!

PMFL Weekly email – Painted Pebbles

Bonjour! Hola! ¡Buenos días!
We hope that you are well. Thank you to those of you who attended the CPD event this week at Molescroft.

This week, why not try this lovely idea to celebrate key phrases you have learned with the children this year? Find some pebbles at the beach or ask children to bring in their own to decorate. Paint the pebbles in the colours of the flag for France or Spain. Once the pebbles are dry using a sharpie, add a phrase in the target language to the pebble such as: Je m’appelle… or Me llamo…. J’adore le chocolat or J’aime les chats! ¡Me gustan los gatos!

The pebbles can form a display for sharing with parents or could form part of a game asking children to translate the pebbles or go on a treasure hunt and place them around the grounds. When they find them, the children record and write down the phrases in the TL and translate to English.

Gracias! Merci!

PMFL weekly email – Number lesson idea and CPD next week!

Bonjour! Hola! ¡Buenos días!
We hope that you had a lovely Easter break. Remember there are still spaces left on our free CPD next Wednesday 22nd April 12:45 to 4pm at Molescroft. Watch some live teaching in action, hear the latest updates for PMFL and share ideas with colleagues. You will also be awarded a £25 Amazon voucher to spend on MFL resources for your school.

This week, why not try the following carousel ideas for learning the numbers in and out of order from 1-12. This is particularly useful in Y3 if children have had no previous experience of learning the numbers in the target language but also useful as a revision and could focus on numbers 10-20 instead for example or multiples of 10 but you may need more dice for activity 3.

Children work in groups of 5. You would need an hour for this lesson, for shorter lessons reduce the number of activities.

Children rotate around the 5 different activities, spending around 10 minutes on each activity.

Activity one – Take 12 paper cups/tubs/ and write the numbers in the target language on cups or labels. Children first of all arrange them in order then take it in turns to throw ping pong balls into the cups. They then say the number in the TL and in English and add up their scores.

Activity two – Matching cards: 12 cards with the numeral on and 12 cards with the number written in the target language. Children work to match them up. Then they turn the cards face down and take it in turns to find a match. The process can be repeated.

Activity three – Dice game: Take it in turns to throw two dice, say the number in the target language thrown. There are then 11 cards with simple sentences on matching cards to correspond to the number thrown linked to previous learning. (As there are two dice the lowest score is 2)
Examples: 2: Je m’appelle…… 3: J’ai 7/8 ans…. 4: J’ai un chat… 5: J’ai un chien…6: J’aime le chocolat….7: Je n’aime pas les frites…. 8: J’adore les pommes… 9: J’ai un lapin…10: J’ai une tortue… 11: J’ai un hamster.. 12: J’aime les bonbons.

Activity four: Hoop game: Set up 4 hoops in a line labelled with 1, 2, 3, 4, children take it in turns to throw 4 bean bags into the hoops. They say the number in the target language as they throw the bean bag into each hoop and then add up the total and say in the target language.

Activity five: Number cards in target language on the table 1-12 muddled up and multilink cubes. Children place the correct number of cubes next to each number card and say it in French. Then have a sheet with the numbers in the target language and visual images that the children have to match up with a pencil and a ruler.

Start and finish the lesson with a number song such as (French) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsc3qLMaCu8

Bonjour! Hola!
Wishing you all a very happy holiday and Easter (¡Feliz Pascua!) (Joyeuses Pâques). Remember there are still spaces left on our free CPD for Wednesday 22nd April 1pm to 4pm at Molescroft. Watch some live teaching in action, hear the latest updates for PMFL and share ideas with colleagues.

As we approach the end of the spring term and look towards the summer term, consider how you take your language learning into the open!

Think about the following practical activities which could be done outside or as part of MFL or PE lessons!

  • Counting any repetitive exercises in French or Spanish using numbers 1-20
  • Throwing a ball in a circle at random to rehearse new phrases, colours, words or numbers, food phrases! Anything really!
  • Sentence race games for rehearsal and mastering or pronunciation – pass the sentence along the line and say it accurately (if a mistake is made it goes back to the first person in the line – which team is the fastest!
  • Younger learners in Y3 might appreciate running to the correct colour/Number in French/Spanish.
  • Treasure hunt in French or Spanish for older learners with simple clues written in French or Spanish – You could even ask the children to write clues for one another!
  • French cafe or Spanish cafe – set up outside, make menus, order food (real or plastic!)
  • Adapt the town! Ask children in pairs to create an image on A3 paper of a place in the town. Take the sheets outside, create a mini town on the playground, draw roads with chalk, use the town to navigate and rehearse phrases for ‘left’ ‘right’ and ‘straight ahead’ in French and Spanish.
  • Ask the children to invent an outdoor game using known language – what ideas can they come up with! Children are often far more creative and inventive than us!

Bonne chance! plus not forgetting to wish you all – Bonne Vacances!
Happy Easter!

Joyeuses Pâques! ¡Felices Pascuas!

Best wishes

Bonjour! Hola!
Apologies but the Easter link for Spanish has not worked for all. This is slightly different and will hopefully work:
https://www.euroclub-schools.org/easter-in-spain

Here is a new link for French also https://www.euroclub-schools.org/easter-in-france

This week, why not remember to involve parents in the ‘Love for languages!’ Why not send out a short narrative as part of your newsletter or post something on your website to involve parents.
Make suggestions for developing a love for languages at home from suggesting phrases daily at dinner for example: ‘Bon appétit!’ or send a list of key phrases for holidays in French/Spanish or other languages!

There are also a number of language apps and websites for children to use outside of school:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/zxsvr82
https://www.duolingo.com for kids for French or Spanish
