PMFL weekly email – fiesta time!

Bonjour! ¡Hola!
This week, why not create a real life Birthday celebration in the target language? Investigate how Birthdays are celebrated in France or Spain. Sing Birthday songs, play a Spanish or French party game. Re-create a piñata or see if a local shop or supermarket might donate one!

You can also make Spanish or French party invitations with a few key pieces of language.

PMFL weekly email – using photographs!

Bonjour! ¡Hola!

This week, as a starter activity, why not share a photograph.
There is a selection attached or discover your own!
Are there any words in the target language children can see?
Where is it?
What is it?
What can we learn about the culture from the photo?
Do you like it?
Have you seen something similar on a holiday?

It is amazing the discussion, just one photograph can create!
Best wishes, Au revoir! Hasta Luego!

PMFL weekly email: Writing about your favourite outfit!

Bonjour! ¡Hola! Take time to complete the language trends survey.

https://all-languages.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f477ca697f1122b77dc48a710&id=82ebcd2fa2&e=c4fac0d8fc

Now, why not try this idea with your Y4 upwards pupils in French or Spanish!

When learning clothing items, once the children are feeling more confident, provide a list, sentence builder or support mat with vocabulary.

Ask the children to draw their favourite outfits.
Label them.
Use the images to create sentences about what they are wearing.
Encourage children to draw items not people if they do not feel confident about their art skills!
Ask them to present their outfit to the class!
Have a super weekend! Best wishes, Au revoir! ¡Hasta luego!

PMFL weekly email – map of the town

Bonjour! ¡Hola!
We hope it has been another successful week of learning wherever you are! Thank you to all of you who have notified us that you are taking part in the Translatathon! It is wonderful to hear about so much interest in this event!

Why not try this idea in your MFL lesson or classroom? Ask the pupils to create a map of their town or one from their imagination. Label the buildings in French or Spanish. Once you have modelled and taught directions, ask pupils to use their maps to give simple directions in French or Spanish. This might take place over several lessons.

Don’t forget to sign up for one of our free CPD events this year, if you have not done so already! See attached for further details.

Have a great weekend!
Best wishes

PMFL weekly email: Dice games

Bonjour! ¡Hola!
This week, why not try this idea for encouraging repetition and writing particularly amongst older Y5 and Y6 learners. Create a slide similar to these two below in French or Spanish, you can choose all sorts of themes depending upon what you are working on:

Students take it in turns to roll a dice or you can use an electronic one if preferred. They have to say and write the phrase which matches the number on the dice. To make sentences more complex they could do two throws for the first and second parts of the sentence.

Children can also invent their own dice sentences using previously used sentence builder sheets you may have been working on to ensure accurate grammar and spelling.

Also why not sign up for the ‘Translatathon’ – it’s not too late to take up this opportunity!

Please also see attached our remaining free CPD offer for this year with two dates, 4th March 1-4pm, Snaith and 22nd April 1-4pm Molescroft, Beverley. The Beverley event will provide the opportunity for you to see some live MFL teaching as well as hear about the latest language updates.

Bonne weekend!

PMFL Weekly email – el cuerpo, le corps

Bonjour! ¡Hola!
We hope that you have had a super week back!
Here are some different ways to learn the parts of the body in French or Spanish!

Spanish

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh-3pBeVcaI
This is a great Spanish song for seeing the spellings for the words and more suitable for older children

The second song may work well with KS1 and Y3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a52j892-zpA

French

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX7pfspDAlM

Introduce the vocabulary to the children in a variety of ways, pictorial, matching activities, repetition and use of audio – visual slides.
Take part in the song with actions in the target language.
Discuss how to spell the words.
Ask the children to make informed guesses based on what they already know – phonics and sound-spelling links.
Make a list of the body parts.
Give children post it notes.
Ask them to label their partner.
Take a photo for their folder or journal.

Don’t forget to sign up for one of the free CPD events in March or April this year! With the incentive of a £25 Amazon voucher to spend on MFL resources for your school!

Or why not join us for the ‘Translatathon’ event! This is a super way to raise the profile of MFL amongst your pupils and in your school!
The first part of the competition can be held within your school.

Have a lovely weekend!
Best wishes

PMFL Weekly email – Happy New Year! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Bonne année!

Happy New Year! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Bonne année!
Welcome back everyone!
Looking forward to another year of sharing ideas with you all.
Remember it is not too late to sign up for the Translatathon event! Details are attached.
The final will be held at Beverley Grammar School on Thursday 25th June 2026.

This week, why not revisit the months of the year with these two songs and ideas:
Explain to the children that although the months of the year for each language have many near cognates, pronunciation can still be a challenge. Use it as an opportunity to focus on the phonics for French or Spanish. Use actions and ask the children to come up with ideas for how they might be able to remember sound – spelling links.

Spanish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1Si5fqOqbo
French https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_u2SigckNQ

We also have a CPD event which will run in March and again in April this year at two different venues to suit
(note the content is the same if you previously attended our autumn event).
(£25 Amazon voucher awarded for attendance to spend on school MFL)
